Who is “American”

Years ago, I wanted to make sure my 5 year old twins weren’t aware of discrimination or race, so I asked them who is “American”. Well, it’s because I grew up when Filipinos always assumed only white people were American. It’s not “racist”, but I’d often correct relatives and let them know when I was young that I TOO was American. So this is how I did I checked my twins when they were little:

I asked them if their mom and dad were Americans. They said yes. 

I asked if they were Americans; they’d say yes. 

I asked if Martin Luther King Jr. was American; they’d say yes.

I asked if their dad’s mom and dad were Americans. They’d say yes.

I then asked if my mom and dad were Americans and they both said “no!”

I was shocked and asked them why their grandma and papa (my mom and dad) aren’t Americans. They said it’s because they’re democrats! 

Let me tell you…my mama did NOT like this story.  oh mama…I miss you so much, but you know you raised 5 Republicans right? Love and miss you everyday mom.
